South Tyrol Film Festival

27.10.2017

"Manaslu - Mountain of Spirit," the last great adventure of Hans Kammerlander will be shown in the cinema starting November 2018. It is filmed in South Tyrol and Nepal. The shooting began at the end of August in South Tyrol. Ahornach in the Tauferstal, Seceda the little peak, the Peitlerkofel or the Moosstock are an excerpt of the impressive film scenes. The focus of the shooting is the life of the young Kammerlander. From the 8-year-old mountain farm boy to the trained mountain guide and a top climber, whose life has taken a completely new direction because of Reinhold Messner's call. A South Tyrolean climber who becomes a legend in the eight-thousanders. A glance into the past also depicts the meager life of the Kammerlander family at the mountain farmhouse. Thus, a farmhouse with a barn was adapted as a film set for the shooting in Ahornach to resurrect the old times.

he film shows more than just adventures, mountaineering, and sailing. The breathtaking landscape of South Tyrol and Nepal, as well as stories about its people, also offer an insight to an audience which is not involved in mountaineering. For example, the story about the South Tyrolean "lightcatcher" Kurt Moser who used an old technique, which was at the origin of photography, to capture pictures on silver-plated glass plates. Each image is a unique copy of humans or landscapes. Each picture is a non-copyable unicum of mountain farmers or landscapes in South Tyrol.

Adventure in the here and now

The highlight of the film, however, takes place in the here and now when the last great adventure of Hans Kammerlander will be documented at the 8163-meter-high Manaslu in Nepal. In the middle of October, Hans Kammerlander and his friend and extreme climber Stephan Keck start the expedition. It is a decision that took him 26 years to return to the tragedy of 1991 and finally process the events of that time. Hans Kammerlander wants to walk his path to the end. Not least for this reason, he has always refused to be one of the firsts who has mounted all the eight-thousander without additional oxygen.
